Pediculosis or head lice infestation or pagkalat ng kuto is a country-wide problem in the Philippines. Actually, according to a study conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the University of the Philippines, head lice infestation is considered as the second common health problem in public schools next to tooth decay. And yet, it seems that many still underestimate this issue. Not enough attention goes into preventing and eliminating the persistent ailment.

People needs to be more informed about head lice, the way it breeds and how to properly treat the condition. As Filipinos are prone to usingĀ  traditional methods passed down from older generations, a nationwide campaign should be set in place to help the students and their families.

Lamoiyan Corporation’s Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo initiated in 2016 the KKK or Kilusang Kontra Kuto to lead the fight agents head lice infestation. This year 2018 is the coalition’s 3rd year already and it doesn’t stop in reaching out to more people who are still unaware on how to properly treat head lice.

To start the campaign this year, a Kick-Off event has been held in Bagong Silangan Elementary School in Quezon City. An informative talk and presentation was held with a dozen moms of some students as the attendees. While the mothers are being taught about head lice and how to treat them, a batch of students were called one by one to be shampooed with Licealiz. The students happily stayed put as their hair were washed and treated with Licealiz. After the treatment they were given “suyod” so that they are able to brush off the dead head lice living on their hair.

One of the biggest hindrances to the elimination of head lice are the myths surrounding it. For instance, it is commonly believed that kuto is caused by bad hygiene and that only girls can be infested with head lice. Treatment is also done through unconventional and potentially harmful methods such as putting mayonnaise or kerosene on the infested person’s head.
