Training Your Child’s Oral Muscles To Correct Their Teeth Alignment

When we talk about dental health to our children, the information we impart is limited to what they can understand and put into practice. Your dentist who is trained to care on a wide variety of dental health concerns have been dealing with incorrect jaw development that causes crooked teeth among children.

As your child grows, the muscles that surround the face have a great impact on the proper development of the jaw and overall health. Most noticeably, it can affect the facial shape and the manner your child speaks. But what if your child has poor oral habits (incorrect myofunctional habits) that have led to crowded teeth and underdeveloped jaws?

When teeth are out of alignment, the jaw muscles need to work harder by compensating the jaw joints to move out of its normal position to a position that allows the teeth to meet when biting. But this put pressure on the jaw joints and can further damage your teeth.

If you think your child has these symptoms, it is worth discussing your concerns to your dentist. At MRC Clinic/Green Apple Dental Clinic, the dentist will examine jaw movement, take X-rays of your mouth and jaw, and evaluate your dental history for signs that is causing the incorrect dental alignment.

According to Dr. Gamaliel Urbi, DMD, DIBO, the major reason why children develop crooked teeth is not mainly because of heredity, but of poor oral habits that include mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking.

Corrective treatment ranges from wearing Myobrace appliances to kid-friendly therapies for re-training the oral muscles. Myobrace is a removable dental appliance that is worn for just 1-2 hours at daytime and while sleeping at night. Once you decided to enroll your child at MRC Clinic/Green Apple Dental Clinic, your child will immediately get an evaluation, wear customized/removable Myobraces and be scheduled for the next appointment that will include therapies for correcting the poor oral habits of your child.

It could take some minor adjustments but could mean a world of difference in your child’s overall health, confidence and perfect smile.
