Disinfecting Our Homes Can Help Fight Coronavirus

Posted on by

The fight against coronavirus starts first in ourselves, thru proper handwashing, personal hygiene, and observing social distancing. And next to it will be in the place where we spend almost a hundred percent of our time now that we are in enforced community quarantine – at home.

Disinfecting Our Homes Can Help Fight Coronavirus

Now that we know that novel coronavirus can spread through small respiratory droplets that can survive for days on surfaces, most of us have started to disinfect our homes and offices, especially so if there are family members and colleagues who are vulnerable to infection.

Here are a few guidelines on how to effectively disinfect one’s surroundings against coronaviruses such as the COVID-19.

Identify the areas at home that have the highest traffic which is usually the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom when prioritizing time in cleaning.

Use disinfectant sprays and multi-purpose cleaners to routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, elevator buttons, countertops, door and cabinet handles, desks, phones, and other hand-held gadgets, remote controls, computer keyboards, toilet seats, faucets, and sinks. Carpets, rugs, and curtains can also be disinfected. If you have pets, don’t forget that virus droplets can also fall on their fur so make sure to wash hands after petting or touching them.

Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2

The United States Environmental Protection Agency actually listed out 40 types of disinfectant products that can be used against coronaviruses. You can check the list here.

It is best to use products that can disinfect 99.9% of viruses and bacteria since they can kill human coronaviruses.

To make disinfection more efficient, dirty surfaces should ideally be cleaned first using detergent soap and water, or other appropriate cleaning solutions. It is also advisable to wear disposable gloves while cleaning and disinfecting or wash hands immediately after using disinfectant products.

Every time I get a delivery, I immediately go outside and disinfect everything the delivery person could have touched. I don’t think the outside of my house has ever been cleaned so thoroughly and so often.

Great tips on multiple service areas to wipe down. In my house with the kiddos, all the areas need a good scrubbing.
