Why Filipino Kids Need More Play—and How Parents Can Help

How to Encourage Kids to Be More Physically Active: A New Movement Shows the Way

A recent survey by the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) revealed a concerning trend: 8 out of 10 Filipino kids are not getting enough physical activity. In a world where gadgets and screens are more accessible than playgrounds, encouraging children to move more has become a real challenge for parents.

But a new initiative combining fun, play, and proper nutrition is offering a solution—and showing just how possible it is to get kids moving again.

Start With Fun, Structured Physical Activities

One of the best ways to make kids more physically active is to introduce them to play-based exercise. That’s the idea behind the Strong Kid Camp, held at Bridgetowne Obstacle Park from May 31 to June 1. It featured specially designed obstacle courses like the Monkey Bars, Ring Bar, Balance Beam, and Z-Wall—challenges that encouraged movement, agility, and strength through play.

Nearly 300 kids joined the event, many for the first time trying out real-world obstacle courses under the guidance of youth fitness experts.

Make Physical Activity Social and Engaging

Partnering with Ninja Monkeys Philippines, a youth obstacle club founded by athlete Kaizen Dela Serna, the camp brought energy and community to the event. Dela Serna, a passionate advocate for active play, shared:

“When kids move together, support each other, and challenge themselves in a fun way, they don’t just build muscle—they build confidence.”

Letting kids enjoy exercise with peers or as a family activity helps them see movement as fun—not a chore.

Support Active Play With Proper Nutrition

Beyond movement, the event highlighted the role of proper nutrition in fueling physical activity. Nutrition expert Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa emphasized the importance of nutrients like Calcium, Phosphorus, and Vitamins A and D, which are essential for muscle growth, bone development, and overall health.

Without the right fuel, kids may feel too tired to play—or worse, miss out on physical milestones altogether. Nutritious meals, paired with active routines, are key to building a strong foundation.

Set the Example and Encourage Movement Daily

Encouraging kids to be more active starts at home. Let them walk the dog, play outside, join weekend sports, or dance to music in the living room. Parents play a major role in modeling movement as part of everyday life.

Kaizen Dela Serna explains,

“It’s not about being the fastest or the strongest. It’s about moving, learning, and pushing limits a little at a time. That’s how strength and resilience are built—physically and mentally.”

Events Like Strong Kid Camp Create Lifelong Impact

According to Antonio Miguel Cabanban, Brand Manager behind the campaign, the goal was more than just a one-time event.

“We wanted to raise awareness about the rise of sedentary lifestyles and offer a real solution—fun, physical activity supported by the right nutrition. It’s a commitment to helping kids grow stronger every day.”

The success of Strong Kid Camp proves that when given the opportunity and support, kids will rise to the challenge—and enjoy doing it.
