As the Philippines approaches the peak of the rainy season, SM Cares is intensifying its coastal cleanup campaigns to help safeguard communities from flooding and marine pollution.
From January to June 2025, SM Cares mobilized 8,571 volunteers from various SM malls and coastal communities nationwide. Together, they collected 70,887 kilograms of trash from shorelines and waterways, reinforcing the organization’s mission to strengthen disaster resilience and protect the environment.
SM Cares’ Ongoing Environmental Commitment
“This isn’t just about picking up trash—it’s about saving homes, safeguarding health, and helping communities become more resilient to the floods and diseases that come with the rainy season,” shared Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Cares Program Director for the Environment.
Coastal cleanups not only protect marine ecosystems but also reduce the risks of flooding in nearby communities. Removing plastic waste and other non-biodegradable materials from shorelines helps keep waterways clear, preventing blockages that worsen storm surges and spread waterborne diseases.
