Experts Call for Stronger Programs Combining Nutrition and Vaccination for Holistic Child Health

Manila, Philippines — Health experts, nutritionists, and parent advocates are urging stronger multi-sectoral collaboration to integrate both nutrition and vaccination into child health programs. This call was reinforced during the Health Connect Forum, hosted by Dr. Eric Tayag, former DOH Undersecretary and past PFV President, where leaders in health and nutrition gathered to highlight the urgent need for holistic approaches in protecting Filipino children.

Why Nutrition and Vaccination Must Go Hand in Hand

Children make up a third of the country’s population, yet nearly three in ten under the age of five are stunted due to malnutrition. Meanwhile, vaccination coverage remains at only 61% as of January 2025—far from the 95% herd immunity target. These challenges show the pressing need to combine efforts in nutrition and immunization to raise healthier and more resilient Filipino children.

Expert Insights on Holistic Child Health

  • Theresa A. Rivas, Nutrition Officer III of NNC-Calabarzon, emphasized that proper nutrition within the first 1,000 days of life leads to stronger immune systems, better maternal health, and improved productivity later in life.
  • Dr. Maria Cristina Alberto, PFV Board Member and Founder of Hope in Me Club, explained that nutrition alone is not enough. Vaccination remains vital to protect children against preventable diseases throughout their lifetime.
  • Dr. Allen Mallari, President of PAPSHI, called for stronger public-private partnerships to implement school feeding programs alongside school-based vaccination drives.

Local and Community Initiatives

In Lipa City, coordinated efforts are underway for the Department of Education’s school-based immunization program covering Grades 1, 4, and 7. Dr. Corazon Sabile of the West District Health Center also highlighted the launch of an Immunization Caravan supported by the Local Chief Executive to reach 95% coverage.

Medical societies also signaled readiness to strengthen efforts. Dr. Lulu Bravo of PFV and Dr. Gladness Henna Martinez of PMA encouraged localized programs, while parent advocates like Ms. Alexenda Absin Macuja, founder of Best Nanay, stressed that mothers are key frontline caregivers.

PHAP Executive Director Teodoro Padilla concluded with a strong call for collaboration among government, healthcare professionals, private sector, academe, and parents to ensure holistic child care and build healthier futures.

Moving Forward

The forum, titled “Vax to School: Building Healthy Learners with Vaccination and Nutrition” and organized by PHAP with PMA and PFV, ended with a unified message: good nutrition and timely vaccination together form the foundation of holistic child health.

The event was livestreamed on the official Facebook pages of PHAP, PMA, and PFV.
