We often think of pimples as part of the teenage years—but for many of us, acne doesn’t end with high school. One of the most stubborn forms, cystic acne, can follow us into adulthood, making us feel self-conscious during job interviews, important events, or even on an ordinary day.
Understanding Cystic Acne
Unlike small breakouts, cystic acne appears as large, painful, pus-filled pimples that form deep under the skin. According to Dr. Julie Anne Patricia M. Songco, dermatologist at Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed), these pimples happen when oil and dead skin cells clog pores, attract bacteria, and cause infection.
The body’s response—sending white blood cells to fight the infection—leads to swollen, red, and often scarring breakouts. Common triggers include:
- Naturally oily skin
- Humid environments or heavy sweating
- Certain medications
- Family history of acne
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
Simple Steps to Manage Breakouts
The good news is that cystic acne can be managed with the right care. Dr. Songco recommends these time-tested products and habits:
- Invest in proven creams.
- Benzoyl Peroxide reduces inflammation, fights bacteria, and unclogs pores.
- Salicylic Acid keeps breakouts from worsening.
- Retinoid A prevents dead skin cells from clogging pores.
- Use gentle cleansers.
Harsh scrubs with exfoliating beads can irritate skin. Stick to mild, non-drying facial washes. - Wash twice daily.
Once in the morning and once at night—no more, no less—to avoid stripping your skin’s natural moisture. - Always remove makeup.
Sleeping with makeup, plus the day’s dust and sweat, worsens breakouts. Look for non-comedogenic products (won’t clog pores). - Resist popping pimples.
It’s tempting, but squeezing can spread bacteria, cause infections, and leave permanent scars.
When to See a Dermatologist
If your acne keeps coming back no matter what you try, it may be time to consult a dermatologist. A doctor can provide personalized treatments and, if needed, recommend minimally invasive procedures to help your skin heal safely.
Dr. Songco reminds us that cystic acne takes time to heal—but with expert advice and consistent care, clearer skin is possible.
