Pru Life UK and Prudence Foundation Launch SHIELD Project to Fight Dengue and Leptospirosis

As climate change continues to affect communities, the rise of climate-sensitive diseases like dengue and leptospirosis has become a serious health concern in the Philippines. To help families and local communities prepare, Pru Life UK, with the support of Prudence Foundation, has launched the SHIELD Project (Sustainable Health Interventions for Eradicating Leptospirosis and Dengue).

The program is now being implemented in Malabon and Caloocan, two areas that have been highly vulnerable to climate-related health risks.

Building Stronger, Safer Communities

The SHIELD Project is backed by Prudence Foundation’s ₱10 million Climate and Health Resilience Fund (CHRF), which supports local projects designed to fight the health impacts of climate change.

For 2025, the initiative aims to reach 6,700 beneficiaries, including:

  • 200 barangay healthcare workers trained in disease prevention
  • 2,000 residents educated on prevention strategies
  • 4,000 community members reached through health campaigns
  • 500 community leaders trained on WASH practices (water, sanitation, hygiene)

Practical Actions for Families and Communities

The project includes community-based interventions such as:

  • Education campaigns on dengue and leptospirosis prevention
  • Training health workers and LGU partners on faster detection and response
  • Clean-up drives and distribution of mosquito nets and WASH kits
  • Early warning systems for disease outbreaks
  • Inclusive health education, empowering women and vulnerable groups to lead prevention efforts

In 2024, dengue cases in the Philippines rose by 33% and leptospirosis by 16%, underscoring the urgent need for initiatives like SHIELD.

“As the impacts of climate change become more visible, building health resilience is not just necessary—it’s urgent,” said Maricel Estavillo, VP for Sustainability and Takaful Head at Pru Life UK.

Long-Term Vision for Safer Families

Beyond short-term prevention, the SHIELD Project is designed as a long-term model that can be replicated in other high-risk areas. It aligns with the Department of Health’s climate and health adaptation strategy, reinforcing Pru Life UK’s commitment to protecting Filipino families not only financially but also through stronger, healthier communities.

“This initiative empowers communities with the knowledge and tools to save lives and protect livelihoods,” Estavillo added.
