Health experts, advocates, and parent communities are coming together to strengthen the country’s fight against meningitis — a life-threatening yet preventable disease that can leave survivors with lifelong complications. Hosted by Dr. Eric Tayag, the Health Connect Forum gathered leaders from the Department of Health (DOH), the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination (PFV), and parent organizations to call for better vaccination access, stronger public awareness, and unified community action.

Protecting Families from Meningitis: Experts Highlight Urgent Need for Vaccination
Manila, Philippines — The recent Health Connect Forum placed meningitis in the spotlight as experts echoed the World Health Organization’s (WHO) goal to eliminate the disease by 2030. Despite the availability of vaccines, meningitis remains a silent threat in the Philippines. The disease can kill within 24 hours or leave survivors with disabilities such as seizures, hearing loss, and vision problems — conditions that deeply affect families both emotionally and financially.
According to Dr. Maria Kristina Marasigan, Director IV of the DOH Health Promotion Bureau, prevention remains a top priority under the Universal Health Care Law. “Our goal is not just to raise awareness but to empower Filipinos to make informed health decisions,” she said, emphasizing that many Filipinos are willing to get vaccinated but lack access and clear information.
Learning from the Past, Protecting the Future
Experts from the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP) recalled how preparedness and vaccination proved vital during past meningococcemia outbreaks. “Outbreaks are unpredictable,” said Dr. Elizabeth Escaño-Gallardo, “but our experience has proven that vaccination remains our best defense.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Josefina Carlos of the University of the East–Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMCI) reminded the public that the clock is ticking toward the WHO’s 2030 target. “Although vaccine hesitancy has decreased, collaboration among communities, healthcare workers, and organizations remains crucial,” she said.
A Collective Effort to Protect Every Filipino Child
Forum reactors agreed that meningitis prevention requires collaboration beyond the medical community. Dr. Gladness Henna Martinez of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) emphasized that disease prevention must also address social determinants of health, such as education and community access.
Representing patient voices, Ms. Ara Lanorio of the Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO) urged policymakers to include meningitis vaccination in national immunization priorities. Similarly, Ms. Erika Jane Viray, Founder of Moms Support Moms PH, encouraged parents to stay informed: “Knowledge is key to protecting our children and families.”
From the private sector, Mr. Teodoro Padilla, Executive Director of the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP), underscored the power of collaboration: “No single sector can defeat meningitis alone. We need strong public and private partnerships to protect every Filipino.”
Raising the Flag for Awareness and Unity
The event concluded with PFV, PMA, and PHAP, supported by Sanofi Vaccines Philippines, joining the global campaign to raise the Meningitis Awareness Flag — a symbol of remembrance, unity, and hope. The tri-colored flag serves as a powerful reminder that defeating meningitis requires collective action across all levels of society.
The webinar was livestreamed on the official Facebook pages of PHAP, PMA, and PFV, allowing more Filipinos — including parent communities — to join the call for a meningitis-free future.
