Non Genetic Reasons Why Kids Develop Bad Teeth

Posted on by

When parents realized that one of their children is having a crooked teeth, their initial reaction is to think of family history who have similar conditions.  Recent studies shows that hereditary or genetics has nothing to do with having bad teeth. In fact if we look at some discoveries of Janet Monge, Keeper of Physical Anthropology at the Penn Museum, from studying children’s skulls who lived 5,000 years ago, teeth are usually straight, white, symmetrical.

When the Industrial revolution happened, the way of life changed. Working mothers resort to feeding bottles because they couldn’t take their babies with them. Actually the way an infant sucks from a bottle is different from how she feeds at the breast. Breastfed infants have to work hard to get milk. And that muscle training shapes the growth and development of the face. With every pull-they create a wide and more projected jawbone. Infants also develop the proper tongue position, which is high up in the palate that actually pushes on the beginning front teeth.

People around the globe spend millions on braces, retainers and tooth extractions to improve their smiles. But the ultimate question still deserves an ultimate answer: Why did we develop a bad teeth?

Dr. Barry Raphael, DMD Orthodontist that this is one problem that begins at birth as soon as a baby tries to nurse with its mother. He said that many years ago, people don’t need to breathe heavily like we do now, many kids are walking with their mouth open, their tongue hanging down from the palate (roof if the mouth) which in all alters the way the jaw grows. An improper growth of jaws like being undersized, makes new tooth harder to squeeze in that results to crooked teeth.

Since a few thousand years ago, teeth were not crooked so it cannot be with the genes. Genes don’t change that fast. Hence, we can call it epigenetic because our genes are being triggered by the interaction with the environment, Dr. Barry Raphael, DMD said.

The good news is that there is a great solution to correct those bad oral habits for kids! With the Myobrace system, they look at the underlying causes of bad teeth and tries to deal with them. There are two important parts of the treatment: The Myobrace activities and wearing the Myobrace appliance.

The activities include teaching kids to breath with their nose, keeping their lips together, keep their tongue resting on the roof of the mouth, and proper swallowing so the jaws can grow in their proper full size. In short these activities sets the trajectory of growth in the right direction. Thus, making more room for new tooth to come in straight.

With the Myobrace system not only they want your children to look good but they also want them to develop good airway, good breathing, good posture and good health.

Green Apple Dental/MRC Clinic offers Myobrace and more dental services that you and your family might need.
